ADVERTS & LINKS

Volks Railway, designed by Magnus Volk, was opened on 4 August 1883 and was the first electric railway in Britain open to the general public. It runs from Brighton Pier to Black Rock (to the edge of the Marina), with a stop halfway.

Royal Crescent, at one time the home of the late Lawrence Olivier, was built between 1798 and 1807.

Towards the Marina, but not visible from the roadside, is a "naturist" beach. There are plenty of warning signs for the unwary and the beach has been built up to give privacy.

Madeira Terrace, built as a promenade half way up the cliff face, was finished in 1898 and runs for 0.75 mile along the front. It covers a lower promenade adjacent to Madeira Drive. Lower end of Marine Parade, with Amex House behind Lower promenade below Madeira Terrace

The Madeira Lift, built in 1896, stops on all three levels and is still in working order today. Ring the bell at the middle or top level, and a very nice attendant will set the lift in motion for you. It certainly beats the climb up the stairs!

On the ground floor is Concorde 2, one of the top night spots in Brighton for live music.

The London to Brighton rallies, including the Old Crocks Race and the British Heart Foundation cycle ride, finish at Madeira Drive, and speed trials are still held here. (Unofficial ones held in summer evenings are not encouraged!) Brighton Marina

In 1977, American Express moved its European Headquarters to Edward Street in Brighton, just two streets off the seafront. It's known locally as the "wedding cake" for obvious reasons.
