| The word "laine" comes from the old Saxon "laen" meaning gift or loan, and refers to an area of farmland. Originally Brighton had five laines, each divided into strips called paul-pieces. The tracks across these, known back then as leakways, became the main east-to-west streets in this area - Church Street, North Road, Gloucester Road and Trafalgar Street. | ![]() |

| The paul-pieces, running from north to south, became Regent Street, Gardner Street, Foundry Street and so on. | ![]() |

Many buildings on these streets have been rebuilt - some twice - in the past 120 years, but they have mainly been built over the foundations of the original houses, leaving the streets the same size and shape. However, in general the area is a good mixture of old and new. |

| The North Laine area is full of small independent shops selling a wide range of items - clothes, music (esp. old discs and CD's), new and second-hand books, skate-wear, shoes, antiques, materials, etc., and has a range of popular pubs and cafés. | ![]() |

| City College Brighton & Hove, in Pelham Street, lies at the edge of the North Laine area, just off London Road near St Peter's Church. An adult and further education college, City College also offers places to students from other countries. | ![]() |
