Shoreham, lying seven miles to the west of Brighton, is its nearest sea port. Shoreham also has the nearest small airport , which is also the oldest operational UK airport dating from 1910.

The parish church of St Mary de Haura dates from 1103.

The original "Old Shoreham" was a Saxon village and port slightly north of the present town on the River Adur. By 1100AD the river had silted up and the town of New Shoreham was built on the coast by the Normans. The port's basin, at Portslade, was added in 1854. Shoreham Planes at Shoreham Airport
